Chinese company Bytedance, the owner of China’s version of TikTok called Douyin, has implemented “the most stringent youth protection measures in the history of the platform”.
The announcement of the changes comes from a blog post published by the company on September 17th.
Any “real name authenticated” accounts have entered “Youth Mode”. This mode restricts TikTokers aged 14 and under from using the app at certain times and implementing a maximum time limit per day.
From now on, those in Youth Mode will no longer be able to use the app from the hours of 10 pm – 6 am. They will also be allowed to use the app for just 40 minutes per day.
This is the latest in China’s recent crackdown on technology for young people.
