British Northerners at risk of losing their jobs to robots

Workers in northern England and the Midlands could be the first to lose their jobs to automation and artificial intelligence, a report claims.

The Centre for Cities estimates over a quarter of workers in shops, administration and warehouses could be replaced  by robots by 2030.

Nine areas including Mansfield, Sunderland, Wakefield and Stoke-on-Trent are most affected.

However, it’s not all bad. The government said it is commited to retraining individuals for “the jobs of tomorrow” and developing AI could create 80,000 jobs a year in the UK.

Andrew Carter, chief executive of Centre for Cities said, “Automation and globalisation will bring huge opportunities, but there is also a real risk that many people and places will lose out,”

“We need to reform the education system to give young people the skills to thrive in the future, and we also need greater investment in lifelong learning to help adults adapt to the changing labour market.”
